Tools needed
Phillips head screwdriver
T-30 torx bit and driver
Needle nose pliers
8mm box end wrench
10mm socket and ratchet
(optional) interior trim removal tool
(optional) torque wrench (up to 70 in. lbs. Or 8 N-m)
Installation Instructions:
Pre-installation safety:
Start the GX and ensure that when you move the gear selector out of ‘Park’, the doors automatically lock
If the doors do not auto-lock, DO NOT continue with installation and contact info@mechymade.com to ensure this is working before installing the product.
Open rear door and remove bottom sections of the two trim panels alongside the rear window
Remove covers over the clippable strap in the rear door storage compartment
Remove phillips head screw under cover panel
Remove tool tray from door
Remove the rear door handle by lifting the handle and squeezing the clips on their sides.
Pry away all edges of door panel to remove panel, releasing the clips. There will also be two clips towards center of door
Remove right hand half of the door moisture barrier by pulling the plastic sheet towards you. Best done in a warm environment, or after warming up the butyl rubber.
Use a T-30 to remove three screw on outside edge of door that hold the latch mechanism
Unclip two points where door latch cable attaches to door
Pull out door latch from inside of door and attach the sheathing holder
Remove the white plastic bit on the arm with pliers
Install new ferrel adapter to the arm on the latch
Run metal cable through hole in ferrel holder and through the sheathing holder
Install sheathing on cable and firmly place into sheathing holder
Reinstall latch mechanism to door and Torque the three Torx bolts to 5 N-m (44 inch pounds)
Take the handle mechanism and put the arm pointed downwards (with finger plate removed)
Push mechanism down through the handle bracket on the inside of the door and thread the arm through the front hole (use the right side handle bracket)
Push down until it sits flush on the top of the bracket.
Thread cable up through the bottom of the mechanism, and seat the housing into the bottom of the mechanism. Ensure the housing is between the door frame and the wires running along it.
Wrap the cable around the bolt on the back side of the arm. Left to right should be: bolt head, 2 washers, cable, arm.
Pull the cable down through the opening in the mechanism closest to you.
Use very light pressure to hold the cable taught. Ensure the sheath is fully seated at both ends.
Tighten the bolt on the arm with an 8mm box end wrench ,the cable should slightly deform the plastic, but do not tighten beyond slight deformation
Use a screwdriver to put the door latch into the “closed position”
Ensure there is slight freeplay in the mechanism, so that you can not see any movement in the latch area (looking from the outside). Once beyond a slight freeplay zone, you should see movement in the depths of the latch.
Once freeplay is verified, actuate the lever fully to open the latch.
Use the screw and bar to affix the mechanism to the door. Drop the screw into its hole in the mechanism and line up the recesses in the bare (nut side down) into the bottom of the metal handle bracket. Lightly snug the screw.
Set the handle nut holder into the other handle bracket, allowing the magnet to hold it against the face of the bracket.
Reapply the moisture barrier.
Place the door panel back into place, and snap all of the clips back in
Reassemble upper trim.
Place the handle onto the exposed arm of the mechanism, and install the screw to hold them together. Lightly snug.
Place the handle into the other hole of the door panel, and run the bolt through the hole. Without much forward pressure, screw the bolt into the hole until it catches the nut on the back side. Tighten with a 10mm socket to 8 N-m (70 inch-pounds)
Verify function of the handle release from inside, and ensure that there is freeplay in the handle before the door opens.
Enjoy being able to exit though the rear door of your GX!
Safety:
This mechanism cannot open the door if the doors are locked. The GX is setup to lock the doors any time it is removed from ‘Park’. This needs to be verified to ensure complete safety of this added mechanism. Do not drive with the doors unlocked, as this could allow the rear door to be opened unintentionally by loose items in the cargo area. Do not store loose items in the cargo area. Stay safe and have fun!
